U14B “Flying Squirrels” Give Back to the Ottawa Community This Holiday Season

Last weekend the U14B “Flying Squirrels” traveled to the Pickering Tournament and came back with a gold medal – but that wasn’t the only meaningful event of the weekend. Not only did they attend the U14AA trophy naming ceremony (the trophy was named after Bob Bickerton, the grandfather of their teammate Kaitlyn Beach), but they also reached out to help a couple of women in the Ottawa community.

One of the planned social activities  was to take some idle time and go shopping with teammates. They didn’t just shop for themselves. Each player went armed with $10 of their own money and a list of personal care items that would fill up two shoe boxes. The Shoebox Project is an international program which exists to reduce the feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by women living in shelters. A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community. This year, the players of the U14B Flying Squirrels are providing a Shoebox gift to two Ottawa women that will be spending this holiday season in a local shelter.

U14B Flying Squirrels Win Gold In Pickering

Congratulations to our U14B Flying Squirrels who won gold at the Pickering tournament this weekend and got to share in a special moment with the team. Head Coach Rob MacDonald shared this perspective on the weekend:

“The U14 Flying Squirrels had a great weekend at the 2019 Pickering
Tournament, where we won the U14R division. Not only did they continue
their season undefeated streak by going 4-0 (even though the last game
was a real nail-biter). They worked together to outscore their opponents
by a 20-4 margin.  While at the tournament, we were also able to support
our Assistant Coach, Lesley Beach. Her father and Kaitlyn’s grandfather,
Bob, was recognized for his long-time commitment to the Pickering
Ringette Association. Our fantastic Assistant is a long time ringette
player and grew up playing for Pickering.  The Flying Squirrels were
there to support and congratulate the Beach family on the accomplishment
where Bob had the U14AA Division Winner tournament trophy named after him.
Great weekend, great parents and great friends. Go Squirrels!”
